Use up/down arrows to compare vorticity advection by divergent and nondivergent wind.

(1) 250 hPa wind speed (red contours every 10 m s-1 starting at 30 m s-1), smoothed (N=10) relative vorticity (black contours every 5x10-5 s-1 starting at 5x10-5 s-1), divergent wind (arrows in m s-1), and 1-h precipitation (shaded in mm).
(2) 250 hPa smoothed (N=40) relative vorticity (red contours every 5x10-5 s-1 starting at 5x10-5 s-1), smoothed (N=10) divergent wind (arrows in m s-1), advection of relative vorticity by the divergent wind (black contours every 2x10-4 s-1 day-1, negative dashed, positive solid), and 1-h precipitation (shaded in mm).
(3) 250 hPa smoothed (N=40) relative vorticity (red contours every 5x10-5 s-1 s tarting at 5x10-5 s-1), smoothed (N=10) nondivergent wind (arrows in m s-1), advection of relative vorticity by the nondivergent wind (black contours every 5x10-4 s-1 day-1, negative dashed, positive solid), and 1-h precipitation (shaded in mm).

Forecasts are from the NSSL MPAS model also available here. Output variables are interpolated to a 0.1x0.1 degree latitude-longitude grid.
Select variables are smoothed with a 9-point local smoother run N times.
